The story

Quarky plucks an acoustic guitar and the wooden body pushes the sound out into the room. Antonio de Torres set that shape in the 1850s. Then in 1931 a guitar nicknamed the Frying Pan used a magnet and coil to turn string wiggles into electricity, and rock music was on its way.

What you'll learn

  • A hollow wooden body amplifies a plucked string's vibration.
  • A pickup uses a magnet and coil to turn string movement into an electric signal.
  • The 1931 Frying Pan was one of the first electric guitars.
  • Quarky takeaway: change how you catch a sound and you invent a new kind of music.
