Quarky is writing this for you...

The story

Quarky whacks a drum and feels the air punch back. A stretched skin bounces up and down, shoving air in waves you can feel in your chest, and drums like this are around 7,000 years old. Cymbals came later, with the Zildjian metal recipe from 1623.

What you'll learn

  • A tight drumhead vibrates and pushes air, making a loud low sound.
  • Tighter skins give higher notes, looser skins give lower ones.
  • Drums are thousands of years old and cymbal making dates to 1623.
  • Quarky takeaway: rhythm might be the oldest music there is.
