The story

Seoul uncovered a river that had been buried under a highway, and the neighbourhood got cooler. Water carries heat away as it evaporates, and breezes follow the open channel, so the city gained a natural air conditioner made of water and shade.

What you'll learn

  • Evaporation takes heat away, which cools the air nearby.
  • Concrete and cars store and release heat, making cities hotter.
  • Open water, trees and shade lower a city's temperature.
  • Quarky takeaway: undoing an old mistake can be its own kind of invention.
