Quarky is writing this for you...

The story

Quarky rides the London Eye and notices it never jolts. Bearings, grease and clever design keep friction small where the wheel spins, but keep friction big where the capsules and cables need to grip. Friction is not the enemy, it is a tool you place exactly where you want it.

What you'll learn

  • Friction is the rubbing force between two surfaces that touch.
  • Bearings and lubrication reduce friction so huge things can turn smoothly.
  • Sometimes you want more friction, like grippy shoes or brakes.
  • Quarky takeaway: good engineering is knowing where to add friction and where to take it away.
