Dig deeper

Quarky is writing this for you...

The story

Quarky dives into the Bosphorus and finds two currents stacked like a sandwich. Lighter, less salty water slides one way on top while heavier, saltier water creeps the other way underneath, because saltier water is denser and sinks.

What you'll learn

  • Salty water is denser and heavier than fresh water, so it sinks below it.
  • The Bosphorus has two currents flowing in opposite directions at different depths.
  • Density differences drive currents all over the world's oceans.
  • Quarky takeaway: what you see on the surface is not the whole story.
