Quarky is writing this for you...

The story

At the top of the Burj Khalifa Quarky expects a terrible wobble. But the tower steps and spirals as it rises, so the wind never gets to push in one rhythm and build up a swing. The building's shape scrambles the wind's timing.

What you'll learn

  • Steady wind can push a tall building in rhythm and make it sway more and more.
  • A spiralling, stepped shape breaks up the wind so it cannot find a rhythm.
  • The Burj Khalifa is over 828 metres tall and barely sways at the top.
  • Quarky takeaway: you can beat a strong force by messing up its timing.
