The story
In the mid-1990s the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 arrived, and Super Mario 64 let players run in any direction instead of only left and right. Games stopped being pictures and became places, with a camera you could swing around like a movie director.
What you'll learn
- 3D worlds are built from triangles, drawn about 60 times every second.
- The more triangles a machine can draw, the richer the world looks.
- Super Mario 64 also had to invent how a camera follows a player.
- Kid takeaway: dazzling worlds are simple shapes multiplied by fast math.
