The story

In Chiapas, Mexico in 2018, eight-year-old Xóchitl Cruz López built a solar water heater from old bottles, hoses and scrap wood. Sunlight warmed the water inside so her neighbours could wash without burning wood or paying for gas.

What you'll learn

  • Dark surfaces absorb sunlight and turn it into heat.
  • Water flowing through sun-warmed tubes gets hot without any fuel.
  • Xóchitl was eight when she won a science prize for her heater.
  • Kid takeaway: free sunshine plus clever building solves real problems.
