The story

William Kamkwamba's family in Malawi had no electricity and no money for school, so he read library books and went to the scrapyard. At 14, in 2002, he built a windmill from bike parts and old pipes that lit his home and pumped water for crops.

What you'll learn

  • A spinning blade can turn a generator and make electricity.
  • Wind carries energy that can be converted into power for lights and pumps.
  • William taught himself from library books after leaving school.
  • Kid takeaway: no money is not the same as no way.
