The story

In Sierra Leone the power kept cutting out, so 15-year-old Kelvin Doe collected discarded electronics and built his own battery, generator and radio transmitter in 2012. Then he broadcast news and music to his community under the name DJ Focus.

What you'll learn

  • A transmitter turns sound into radio waves that travel through the air.
  • Batteries store chemical energy and release it as electricity.
  • Kelvin built all of it from parts other people threw away.
  • Kid takeaway: keep tinkering, even when things keep breaking.
