The story

Remya Jose in India was 14 in 2005 and washing her family's clothes by hand was exhausting. She built a washing machine from an old bicycle frame, so pedalling spins the drum and the laundry gets clean with no electricity at all.

What you'll learn

  • Pedals turn your leg power into spinning motion through gears and chains.
  • A spinning drum plus water and soap is what washes clothes.
  • Remya's pedal washer needs no electricity, so it works anywhere.
  • Kid takeaway: hard chores are invitations to invent.
