Quarky is writing this for you...

The story

Ten-year-old K.K. Gregory was building snow forts in 1994 when snow packed into the gap between her mittens and her coat sleeves. She sewed fleece tubes with a thumbhole, so the fabric went from glove to sleeve with no gap at all. She called them Wristies and started a company.

What you'll learn

  • Fabric traps a layer of air, and trapped air keeps your body heat in.
  • A gap in your clothing lets warm air out and cold snow in.
  • K.K. made her first pair herself, then tested them outside.
  • Kid takeaway: the thing that annoys you is a clue about what to invent.
