The story
In 1905 eleven-year-old Frank Epperson mixed soda powder and water, stirred it with a wooden stick, and left the cup on the porch. That night the temperature dropped. In the morning he pulled out a solid, sweet, stick-handled block of ice. Years later he sold it as the Popsicle.
What you'll learn
- When water gets cold enough, its molecules lock into a solid crystal pattern.
- The stick worked as a handle because it froze right into the ice.
- Frank repeated the accident on purpose to be sure it worked.
- Kid takeaway: notice your accidents, because some of them are inventions.
