Quarky is writing this for you...
The story
Chester Greenwood's ears ached while ice skating in Maine in 1873, and wool scarves itched. At 15 he bent wire into a headband, asked his grandmother to sew fur pads on the ends, and earmuffs were born, then made in his own factory for decades.
What you'll learn
- Trapped air in fur and fabric slows heat escaping from your skin.
- Covering just your ears keeps them warm without an itchy scarf.
- Chester was 15 and later ran a factory making his earmuffs.
- Kid takeaway: being annoyed by something is the first step to fixing it.
