The story
Eight-year-old Abbey Fleck was helping cook bacon in 1993 when they ran out of paper towels. She thought: what if the bacon hangs instead of lying in its own grease? With her dad she made a dish with ridges to drape bacon over, so the fat drips into the bottom. The Makin' Bacon dish sold in stores everywhere.
What you'll learn
- Microwaves shake water molecules inside food, and the shaking makes heat.
- Gravity pulls melted fat straight down, away from the food.
- Abbey drew her idea first, then built a model to test it.
- Kid takeaway: running out of something can be the start of a better way.
